Communicare

ediesmileOn his Facebook page today, my friend David Newman posed a question that had to do with discovering our purpose. I have always seen myself as a communicator of love. Whether through the spoken or written word, I am willing to be a channel, a vessel, a hollow reed for the music to come through. I sometimes call myself “God’s Typist,” since I take dictation from a Source that isn’t internal. When I get out of the way, the messages become more graceful and flowing. When I resist, they become louder and more insistent. So, I listen with both my ears and heart and let ’em in and then send them back out into the world.

When I read David’s question, the word that came through was ‘communicare’. It is a mash-up of communication and caring. When I communicare, I am also communing, both with Spirit and those in my life. The verbiage I use is sometimes carefully contemplated before setting fingers to keyboard and at other times, spontaneous and improvised.

One way I make sure that my communication is caring is by running it through the three gates, as taught by Sai Baba:

“Before you speak, ask yourself: is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, does it improve on the silence?”

The kind and true are no brainers for me. The necessary and improvement on the silence take a little more conscious awareness. There have been times over the years when I have needed to clamp my hand over my mouth to avoid saying something I wish I hadn’t. Most times, I have filters, thank goodness and the words remain within. I also imagine how the words may land and also how I would feel hearing them.

How do you communicate your caring?
